What Are Snoring & Sleep Apnea Devices?

Also referred to as oral appliances, sleep apnea devices comfortably reposition your jaw and tongue to open your upper airway while you sleep. If snoring is the problem, they minimize soft tissue vibrations for a quieter night’s sleep.

For those diagnosed with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA), custom oral devices offer a potential alternative to loud and bulky CPAC machines. However, they aren’t an option for central sleep apnea (CSA).

Not everyone diagnosed with OSA is a candidate for a sleep device. Dr. Szymanski will review the alignment of your jawline to determine if improved airflow can be achieved.

OSA also increases the likelihood of you sleeping with your mouth open, which leads to dry mouth. Decreased saliva flow while you sleep can increase bacterial growth, cavities, tooth decay, mouth sores, and your risk for developing gum disease.

Common Signs of Sleep Apnea

If you’re snoring, aren’t sleeping well, and have the symptoms below you may have sleep apnea.

  • Snoring
  • Bruxism/teeth grinding
  • Periodontal/gum disease
  • Increased cavities
  • Scalloped tongue
  • Morning dry mouth
  • Morning sore throat
  • Morning headaches
  • All-day tension headaches
  • Tense and sore jaw
  • Daytime drowsiness
  • Night sweats
  • Bedwetting in children

Improved sleep may be a top priority, but without proper treatment, OSA can negatively impact your oral health.

FAQs

Dr. Szymanski will inquire about the quality of your sleep and look for oral health clues of sleep apnea during your visit.

Maybe! Snoring is often caused by restricted airflow and the unique anatomy of your mouth and jawline. Dr. Szymanski will advise on whether an oral device can adjust alignment to minimize vibrations and improve airflow.

Yes, you can. However, they may not fit properly. Without a proper fit, these devices may not provide the alignment required to improve your symptoms.

Custom-made oral devices ensure a perfect fit. If they’re comfortable, you’re more likely to wear them.

Like anything new, they may take a few nights to get used to. If you’ve used mouthguards for sports or Invisalign to straighten your teeth, the sensation is similar.

Your comfort is a top priority, which is why we suggest custom-made devices.

Insurance plans vary greatly. The only way to determine if the cost of your device is covered is to call your insurance provider to check your coverage.
